Ren Frayne is the bastard son of the Queen of Frayne, a title he’s more than comfortable with when it brings him limited responsibilities and all the luxuries of life he could ever want. But when the king and Ren’s half-brother, Crown Prince Hellic are brutally murdered, Ren is accused. Now, he is forced to flee the city together with the mysterious prisoner Anik who may know how to survive in the wild, but who seems to have an agenda of his own, one that may spell danger for Ren.Ren’s accuser now sits on his family’s throne, and things are about to get much, much worse. It may be time to seek help in unexpected places.Stag's Run is the first book in the Iron Breakers series
Great book with fast-paced plot and truly engaging characters that kept me interested through the whole book. Really, I had a hard time finding a moment to stop reading because I kept wanting to read "just a few pages more", eventually finishing the book in two sittings - taking the break only because it was hard for me to say goodbye to these characters. Fortunately it is a trilogy so we will be able to meet these charming characters in the next parts. The characters are very believable and the decisions they make (sometimes poor decisions, I might add while looking briefly at begining-of-the-book Ren) are true to their character and clearly understandable to the reader, even if they don't agree with it. It might seem like a weird point to make but as a person who absolutely hates unreasonable or plainly stupid decision making in characters that are otherwise described as intelligent and witty just for the sake of advancing the plot I just had to make it! Fortunately you won't find anything like that in this book.On top of just feeling realistic the characters are very interesting. I just cannot help myself from cheering and worrying for my favourites and wondering how they stories will unwind in the next books.SOLID 11/10. The +1 bonus point being for Ilias with whom I instantly fell in love with.
