I have noticed some comments about the sponge. And this is where the confusion about soldering tip care comes in.When you install a new tip on your iron, you need to wrap it in solder before you heat it up the first time. The solder protects the tip and prevents oxides and impurities from being burned into the tip.When you go to use the iron, you first use an item like this product to clean the excess solder from the tip.THEN, you shock the tip by wiping it on the wet sponge. This shocks the impurities from flux other contaminants from the tip. Does it drop the temp of the tip? Momentarily, yes. But the tip will return to it’s original temp almost instantaneously. You are only shocking the tip, not the heater.Once you have soldered your work, melt some solder on the tip again before putting it into the iron holder. Again, this is to coat the tip. Yes, it will turn brown, and black. But that is the solder, not the tip. The tip will stay free of contaminants, and last much longer.As for this product, again, it is sufficient for what it was designed for, removing the excess solder from the tip.does the job. base seems heavy enough not to move. scraping off solder works wellCleans top enough for me to keep working on soldering job for about 45 min and made work so much easier and faster.The item is exactly as stated and cleans the soldering tips but it not all it was made out to be, the base of the item should have been made with a sort of fixation to assist with the job at hand especially when you are soldering.I'm not entirely sure about his product. Yes it basically works, but for me it does not clean an iron tip as well as the traditional damp sponge. Also, I found I needed to hold it down with my left hand when poking my iron into its innards; it needs to be stuck to the bench or made a lot heavier. Overall, not one of my best hobby purchases.I clean my tip in this regularly. It polishes the tip really well. Sometimes, I like to flux my tip before shoving it back and forth in this to give my tip a nice shine.Excellent well made product. I added some extra weight in the base to stop it moving around on the bench. Cleans the soldering tips perfectly.happt with product.
